Summary Background and References
Developer Howard A. Jacobs
Howard attended UCSD and UCLA, graduating with honors in 1980. He completed Law School at UCLA in 1983 and was admitted to the California Bar that same year. Rather than pursue a law practice, Howard founded a real estate development company in 1983 and was licensed as a General Building Contractor by the State of California in 1988.
The business Howard founded became several vertically integrated commercial and multi-family development companies that he managed successfully from 1983 to 2003.
Zev Yaroslavsky, a Los Angeles City Councilman for 20 years and Los Angeles County Supervisor for 20 years after that said about Howard:
I have known Howard A. Jacobs the founder and president of Calstar Equities, Inc. and its affiliates, since 1984. Since that time, Howard has been a successful real estate developer, property owner and member of the community.
During my tenure as a member of the Los Angeles City Council, Calstar developed several projects in my district. My staff and I have always found Howard and his company to be highly cooperative and motivated to invest and develop in a responsible manner, with sensitivity to the community.
Most recently, Calstar assisted in rebuilding the community after the devastating 1994 earthquake by redeveloping several apartment buildings that had been destroyed by the quake.
Howard is an energetic, innovative developer whom I have always found to be at the cutting edge of his profession. I am pleased to recommend him on a personal and professional basis.
Robert (Bob) Bartlett, City Councilman and Mayor in the City of Monrovia California for over 25 years wrote to Howard:
The City of Monrovia wants to congratulate you on the successful expansion of the Huntington/Shamrock retail shopping center. The upgrade and addition of new retail space including Michaels, Yoshinoya Fast Food Restaurant, and Family Fitness have helped to develop this center as the East Huntington Drive Retail anchor.
Your cooperation with the City in the overall upgrade and expansion of this center has had a positive impact on the surrounding residential neighborhood and commercial development.
I look forward to your continued commitment to the City. If I can be of any assistance in facilitating your future expansion plans, please do not hesitate to contact me.
The Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce said about Howard’s company:
…projects reflect their policy of using the latest urban design and construction technology and demonstrate “green” building and energy conservation wherever possible.
An executive of the Northern Trust Bank said about Howard after Howard’s business purchased an environmentally contaminated property from a trust managed by the Bank:
This letter is long overdue, nevertheless, just as important today as ever.
In my twenty years of being involved in the sale of commercial real property I can not recall a time when I have ever had a transaction progress as well as ours did, in large part due to the honesty, integrity and professionalism of the buyer. The sale of the above referenced property was fraught with problems, any of which could have brought the consummation of the transaction to a halt.
We as Seller and you as Buyer both realized our objectives and came away from this transaction confident that we achieved our financial goals. I am hopeful that we will have the opportunity to do business again.
After the sale of a significant portfolio of properties, Howard spent 10 years in Florida and North Carolina, where he founded and operated a real estate finance company and pursued personal real estate development and investment.
Missing California, and especially his days in San Diego, Howard relocated to North County in 2013 with his family; returning to the place he loves most in the world to raise his children and contribute what he can as a creative and productive member of the community.
Some of the properties developed by Howard’s companies include:
